  1. uCould Sid chart?

  3. We have, all heard the current charts
  4. and whatever you geographical location,
  5. in my opinion most of the music is
  6. dire. If this is due to my age or just
  7. that music has become stale I am
  8. unsure. Apart from the usual remixes of
  9. old classics, and the usual drum n base
  10. remixes, I find little that excites me
  11. or begs me to buy it now.

  13. In my frustration I went back to an MP3
  14. player filled with Sid tunes, I know I
  15. am not alone; I know many Commodore
  16. users have Mp3 players with SID tunes.
  17.  
  18. I then decided to put the tunes through
  19. a little reverb to fill them out, and
  20. then split the signal to a pseudo
  21. stereo image using external processing
  22. devices the results were great, fat
  23. stereo SID tunes booming down my
  24. headphones.

  26. I listened to something recently on the
  27. radio I forget the name now, but it was
  28. little more than bleeps with some guy
  29. reciting a poem over the top I think
  30. the tune was thou shall kill something
  31. along those lines.

  33. I then went back to my recording and
  34. decided to take a coupe of SID tunes
  35. add a real drum section and a little
  36. reverb and filtering and compression to
  37. add punch, I then utilised a home made
  38. kludge to make the whole sound stereo
  39. and save the file back to my MP3
  40. player. Now I finally have something to
  41. listen to, fat base a heavy drums, SID
  42. purists will now be gasping in horror
  43. but I am on a project so please excuse
  44. me.

  46. I dont want to take 1 SID tune on its
  47. own and say this is the best because I
  48. reworked a couple of tunes and hey they
  49. all sound great to begin with. Someone
  50. is going to get upset here and say the
  51. originals were far better, I agree the
  52. SID sound is good but wanted to appeal
  53. to a more open market.  Maybe the
  54. Commodore 64 and sid profile would be
  55. improved if a real tune actually made
  56. its way into the charts.

  58. I am not in the process of ripping
  59. someone off for a copyrighted SID tune
  60. I just wanted to make the point that
  61. with a little work many of these older
  62. and indeed new sounding tunes can be
  63. radio prefect certainly the ones I have
  64. been playing with would easily be
  65. welcomed in the local club. Sadly this
  66. is why I am not offering the files I
  67. worked on for download, because they
  68. were a personal test and I dont want to
  69. be at the end of a copyright war with
  70. some demo coder.

  72. Of course the SID tune would need to be
  73. original so no one would get upset
  74. maybe even donate the money made to
  75. charity as a gesture of good faith from
  76. the community.

  78. I have in the past listened to many SID
  79. tunes on my Hi fi as I am sure most of
  80. us have done, and I thought this would
  81. sound great in a club, So maybe a
  82. challenge here then for someone to take
  83. a SID tune (you own the copyright for
  84. or even better a brand new tune) and
  85. with the minimal amount of External
  86. processing have the tune enter the
  87. charts.

  89. There are various hardware items to use
  90. 2 SIDs so Stereo is possible from a
  91. basic machine.

  93. Hasn't it all been done before? Well I
  94. remember a group had so it was claimed
  95. just 2 Commodore Amiga 500s chained
  96. together over the serial port to keep
  97. the timing of the machines, and they
  98. made a Tune using just these machines
  99. as instruments, that managed to get
  100. into the UK top 40 but I cant ever
  101. remember a SID tune entering the Charts
  102. of any country.

  104. Now with things like the Prophet 64 and
  105. Stereo SIDs we could have a worthy
  106. contestant to the Charts.

  108. So there is a challenge for anyone with
  109. the right contacts, have a SID tune
  110. with the minimal amount of external
  111. processing enter the charts, any takers
  112. or would you like to correct me and
  113. name a tune that charted that was
  114. entirely created on the Commodore 64.

  116. Yes we had Zombi nation or whatever
  117. they called themselves taking a riff
  118. from lazy Jones and other people have
  119. samples SID sounds and indeed most of a
  120. SID demo to create a tune but not a
  121. whole; Commodore 64 produced tune
  122. without any external instruments.

  124. If enough of a Buzz was created and the
  125. tune downloaded enough then it would be
  126. possible without the expense of
  127. creating a CD, a few bands have
  128. recently via the web created enough of
  129. a download frenzy that the music
  130. entered the chart before they even
  131. created a CD or even the cover artwork.
